UltraFire S3

Disclaimer: I got the light for review purposes directly from Ultrafire. I didn’t pay for the light and I am not paid for the review. The review is my honest opinion after testing the light.

Specs by Ultrafire

The light is available in 5 different colours, i got the midnight blue one. There seems to be a version with red instead of UV, too, mine has UV.

It seems the Trustfire Mini X3 SE is the same light, while the Trustfire Mini X3 has an additional light at the clip side and slightly different UI.

What you get in the box and build quality

The light comes in a small, black box, which is a bit dramatic, showing the black version of the light in front of fire. Included is a multilingual manual and a short USB-A-C-cable and of course the light itself with it’s integrated battery.
It feels very well made. The anodization is smooth and shiny, bezel and Ring around the switch are metal.

I am not 100% sure of which material the sideswitch assembly is, it is warmer to the touch than the rest of the light.

The switch cover is slightly protruding, but the actual switch sits below the silver ring. There are 2-3mm of travel before reaching the switch.
Ein versehentliches Einschalten wird so auch ohne Lock sehr effektiv verhindert, allerdings fühlt sich der Schalter dadurch auch etwas schwammig an.
In den Schalter integriert ist eine Akkuanzeige.

USB-C charging ist integrated on the opposite to the side switch.

The sideswitch is detented and clicks in every position with a very satisfying click. It is definitely on the firmer side and not likely to switch position on itself, not even i pulling it out of a pocket. The knurling at the sides is grippy, but not sharp. The rest of the light is smooth, but I never had the feeling of it slipping in my hand.

Behind the glas protected TIR hide white and UV light as well as a laser.

Manufacturing is flawless. While testing the light i noticed that the anodization is not the hardest. It slightly scratched off on the corners around the magnet und somehow i managed to take out two tiny points of it.

This is something I noticed on several, especially blue, lights. The anodization seems to be softer than black or tan.

Size

(Top to bottom: Sofirn IF24pro, Sofirn ST1, Ultrafire S3, Boruit U8)

The light measures 102 x 30 x 16mm (button protrudes around 1mm, the clip adds 6mm) and weights 92g. Weight matches the specifications perfectly, the size stated by Ultrafire seems to include sideswitch, main switch and clip!

Carrying Options

Lanyard: there is no Lanyard and no option to attach one either.

Clip: The two way clip is stiff, but not too stiff. It is deep carry and big enough for thicker pocket seams. It stands out quite a bit.
There are two screws, so the clip can be taken off. The heads of the screws are not sinked, so they may catch your pocket. They are hex and smooth, so not a real risk of shredding something. Overall i like the clip.

Magnet: The magnet is impressive. Its really strong and holds the light horizontal without a problem even on slippy surfaces. One of the best magnets I ever experienced in a light!

UI

The UI is simple, but if you like it might have the most impact for your buying decision.

The sideswitch keeps the general state of the light (on / off / lock), just switches between the light sources.

A double click on the main button locks / unlocks the light. If locked, a short and long press lead to a double blink of the activated light source. Unlocking activates the selected light source.

A long press turns the light on if it is unlocked. A short press shows the battery status in the main button.

The Laser just has on or off, just like UV. Both are hold for on, hold for off.
The white light is also hold for on or off, too - and click for mode change (4 levels)

To be honest, this is not my favourite as I am used to click for on / off and hold for mode change. People that are not used to this won’t have problems with it and it’s reasonable for EDC, as it prevents accidental activation even without lock.

Beam profile and measurements

The Laser is… a laser. I like that it’s a red laser, as I prefer this for EDC use - I hate green lasers in presentations. But that’s just personal taste. It is good, not overpowered, not underpowered.

UV is a bit underwhelming. While the UV-part of it is ok, it’s overshadowed by the emitted visible light. It might be because the UV LED is hidden behind a TIR. I would hilghly prefer to have the UV LED in a reflector like Sofirn does in the SR23 - would be even better combined with a ZWB filter.

The white light on the other hand is very nice. With a DUV of 0,000 on low and 0,003 on high it would call it perfectly neutral. The CCT ranges from 5000k on low to 5600k on high. It works very well for EDC tasks with a big spot, a huge corona and a wide, soft spill.

low / high

Flicker is fine, too.

Let’s talk about performance - and start with the driver. It is temperature regulated and sustains higher if the light is cooled. That works well, but the regulation is not the finest. It ramps up and down quite a bit. Very visible in the runtime chart, but not noticeable in use, so not a problem.

All in all the performance is very good. After stepping down to around 40% it runs for over two hours before quickly stepping further down.
After that, you get a good hour of usable light. After the last stepdown, the light blinks, but runs to the 5 hours mark before finally shutting down.

It’s rated for 1200lm, on my uncalibrated equipment I get slightly about 950lm. Until now my measurements were in line with those of other reviewers, but please take this with a grain of salt.

This mights seem like the light is not performing well, but please be aware that my equipment is not at all calibrated and more a good estimation with room for errors. So let me sort this a bit: I would say that mid and high are a bit lower than specified, low is spot on and Extreme is in the Range i would expect it, maybe a tiny bit below. Very solid!

Summary

If you are looking for a very well made EDC with a good clip, good light and a good red laser, you should consider the light. If you like the UI or not is up to you, UV could be better.
You could argue about the integrated battery, but without it that form factor wouldn’t be possible, so i think it’s fine in this case.

It’s one of those lights that might make none flashlight people very happy - my wife, who is not at all interested in flashlights took the lights in her hand, played with it for 5 Minutes and for the first time ever she asked if it could be hers after testing.

I liked to carry the light on my office days, as it brings all you could need and disappears in you pocket so you nearly couldn’t fell it.
I know Ultrafire from the old days and can tell you, this is on a different level. Quality of the machining and electronics are not only up to date, but on a really good level.
