Wurkkos TD11

Introduction

The TD11 is a light that hits my design-taste pretty well. But design isn't everything, so I was very curious to see how this flat light without laser, UV- or red light, but with RGB and white side light, performs in the test. At first glance, the UI looked a bit overwhelming - whether it's useful in practice, you can read here.

Package Contents and Impressions

The light comes in the typical white Wurkkos box with a plastic-insert. All important data, as well as a picture of the light, are indicated on the box. The light rests in the tray, safely packed in a small plastic bag. Underneath you will also find a lanyard, a manual and a short charging cable.

The design of the light is interesting. Flat light, somehow futuristic, somehow ergonomic. I like it, but tastes are known to differ. The anodization is matte silver with black accents and white lettering, no sharp edges, only the bezel is a bit more aggressive. The build quality feels high grade and I always enjoy holding the light.

In this, or rather in a fist grip, the light feels great. Both buttons, as well as the slider switch, are perfectly accessible. The display is also easy to read for me, at the latest when I lift my index finger slightly.

There are two tail buttons. A round one and an angled, rectangular one. The round button hides a two stage switch, the rectangular one a normal, single stage one. All stages of the buttons are crisp and tactile.

On the side is a slider with 3 positions. Each clicks cleanly into place with a nice click, the force required for operation is pleasant - the slider will almost certainly not shift on its own.

Below the slider sits the small display. It shows battery level, estimated remaining runtime and output level. The colors are displayed in the format 123st, which does not refer to any color system. During charging, the light displays the ongoing state of charge, of course.

Looking at the display, there is a USB port behind a sufficiently reassuring rubber cover on the right side. Although it is deep, the cutout is wide enough that I didn't have problems with any cable. During charging, the light can be used up to a maximum of 954 lumens, and the side light is fully available.

One side of the light is rounded with grooves that ensure good grip. On the other side, which is flattened, is the side light. Behind three cutouts in a cover is a white plastic diffuser, behind which are white as well as colored LEDs.

At the front, framed by the black bezel, sit two small, smooth reflectors behind a coated glass lens. The entire reflector unit is manufactured from a single piece. Inside the reflectors sit two SFT-25R. Surprisingly, it looks as if the reflectors rest directly on the LEDs, the gaskets are either hidden or actually non-existent.

Between the LEDs, recognizable as a small black dot, sits the proximity sensor. Whether you like it or not, it is somehow reasonable, because the light generates quite a bit of heat. The LEDs are close to the glass, which is always more dangerous for burning holes in pants pockets than deep reflectors. The sensor reacts quickly when the light is on a higher level and something gets too close to the bezel. Unfortunately, the light does not ramp back up by itself afterwards, this must be done manually. Incidentally, the sensor reacts to reflected light - if you block it, e.g., with a small piece of black rubber, it is disabled.

As should be clear by now from the pictures and description, the battery is built-in and cannot be replaced. Modding is also likely to be difficult with this light, the only things visible are two screws on the side light cover.

My scale shows a slim 114g for the light.

Carrying Options 

Lanyard: A simple lanyard is included. The only attachment option is the clip.

Clip: Although the clip is not quite deep carry, it is nice and wide, without sharp edges and designed with plenty of space underneath. It sits nice and flat, and the opening is also large. Only the screws prevent it from sliding in completely on thicker fabrics / hems.

Magnet: There is no magnet.

(Jacket)pocket: Thanks to its slim design, the light disappears completely inconspicuously in both pants and jacket pockets.


UI

The UI of the light is quite extensive and unique. The basic operation changes with the position of the slider switch. This features three positions: Tactical 𖦏, Eco (Accidental Activation Prevention) and Lighting ☼. In addition, there are two buttons, the smaller, round Tactical Button and the rectangular Touch Button.

If the switch is set to Tactical 𖦏 , there is only momentary light. A light press on the two stage Tactical Button leads to the lowest output level, a firm press to the highest. A press on the Touch Button leads to strobe.

If the switch is set to Ecoany press and hold for 2-3 seconds leads to the lowest output level until you release the switch again.

If the switch is set to Lighting ☼, the interaction options are a bit more extensive. The two-stage function of the Tactical-Button is not used in this mode.

Beam Profile and Measurements

All measurements were done in my 30cm integrating sphere. The temperature was between 20 and 24°C. Additionally, an Opple Light Master III and a TASi TA636B lux meter were used. Please note that this is hobby equipment, so inaccuracies and deviations are possible!

Output and Beam

The beam profile of the light is not bad, but a bit peculiar. Due to the small reflectors and the narrow bezel, the spill is cut off at the sides. You can definitely see this in real world use, not just on a white wall. It's not really terrible, but depending on how you hold the light, it is quite noticeable.

Apart from that, there is a large, uniform spot with a relatively sharp transition to the spill. There are no artifacts, and the beam is overall beautifully uniform. The side light is pure flood without annoying artifacts and tapers off softly at the edges.

The turbo drops quite quickly, and the light heats up accordingly. After that, there is no further stepdown until shortly before the end. All of this is shown on the display almost in real-time and with reasonably accurate values.

The thermal image shows how the light heats up - in this case, after a second turbo activation.

Turbo can be reactivated at any time. If the light is too hot, both output and duration are limited, and the light steps down again immediately. However, if some time has passed and the light has cooled down again, you still get almost full turbo even towards the end of the runtime!

The side light also has a stepdown, in accordance with the specifications. The diagram roughly corresponds to the specifications from Wurkkos. Please note that the side light is difficult to measure due to its shape, so the deviations could certainly be a bit larger.

Beamshots

Unfortunately, I don't have anything that compares really well with the TD11. Therefore, I have a comparison of different flat lights for you, although the rest of the lights also have integrated lasers and UV and are therefore, apart from the form factor, not really comparable. Before that, however, I would also like to show you the somewhat peculiar shape of the beam.

The side light is pure flood. This can be better represented in red, as it stands out nicer against the background.

Since Wurkkos did not name the dynamic modes in more detail and my names are a bit clumsy, here are some moving images of them. The full RGB sequence is not shown, as all RGB modes cycle through all colors. That would be a bit too long for GIFs, though.

Batteries and charging

The charging curve looks flawless. Both the CC- and CV-phases are good, and the charging speed is fast. Wurkkos specifies 1670mAh for the battery, and my charging analyzer calculated approx. 1500mAh - since this is not an exact measurement, it should be fine.


Summary

The TD11 is definitely something special. A flat light with good side light. No laser, no UV - but really bright, with a display and an interesting UI concept. It surprises me that this light hasn't become more popular!

Yes, the UI in the general mode is crowded and the two-stage switch is not fully utilized there, but the operation works well and is largely intuitive. If I really wanted to complain about something there, it would be that I prefer discrete steps over ramping, but that's a matter of taste and not quite as relevant anymore with the display showing the remaining runtime.

The turbo-output is impressive for the size (and of course only short lived), but the sustained output is also nothing the light has to hide for. The side light is so good that I sometimes missed a magnet - ultimately, though, I prefer the tail switch for hand ergonomics. Only the shape of the beam is sometimes a bit annoying, a wider illumination would be nice.

During the testing period, I always enjoyed carrying and using the TD11, mostly on dog walks, but also sometimes at work, and it was also with me on a vacation where it took over the duties of my bedside lamp - the side light pointing towards the wall gives a wonderfully diffuse light.
